Thermocouple Products Reinforced Type R Thermocouple R-SP
R-SP is Furuya Metal’s proprietary reinforced Type R thermocouple, developed through extensive trial and error by integrating the thermocouple material technologies and manufacturing expertise the company has cultivated over many years. Addressing the challenge of creep deformation under high-temperature conditions head-on, R-SP achieves both enhanced strength and sustained measurement accuracy through Furuya Metal’s proprietary material design and manufacturing technologies, a combination that has been difficult to achieve with conventional products.
Without relying on the addition of other metals or impurities, R-SP maximizes the intrinsic properties of the material through a unique manufacturing process, significantly improving creep strength and extending service life. As a result, it maintains the same level of temperature measurement accuracy as conventional Type R thermocouples while delivering stable performance even under demanding operating conditions.
R-SP has been adopted in leading-edge applications such as semiconductor manufacturing processes, where precise temperature control is essential. Its reliability and durability have been demonstrated through proven performance in the field.
Characteristics
A long-life thermocouple with approximately twice the creep strength of conventional Type R thermocouples
Type R thermocouples are a type of thermocouple specified under JIS standards and are widely used in applications such as semiconductor manufacturing due to their excellent heat resistance and temperature measurement accuracy. However, thermocouples can eventually suffer from wire breakage when subjected to continuous loads at elevated temperatures or repeated thermal expansion and contraction during heating and cooling cycles.
One approach to preventing breakage is to increase thermocouple strength through the addition of impurities. However, such additions can affect thermoelectromotive force (EMF), leading to reduced temperature measurement accuracy. To address these challenges, Furuya Metal developed the reinforced Type R thermocouple R-SP, which achieves both high strength and high accuracy through a proprietary manufacturing process without the addition of impurities.
While maintaining the same level of temperature measurement accuracy as conventional Type R thermocouples, R-SP offers approximately twice the creep strength of conventional thermocouple wires. As a result, it is used in a wide range of applications, including semiconductor manufacturing processes and other fields requiring reliable performance under harsh operating conditions.

Hot junction design that preserves R-SP’s reinforced microstructure
Conventional welding methods can alter the elongated microstructure that is characteristic of R-SP, thereby diminishing its strengthening benefits. To preserve these characteristics, Furuya Metal minimizes the fusion zone and employs a joining method in which a platinum sleeve is wrapped around the thermocouple wires and mechanically crimped. This approach enables the reinforced properties of R-SP to be maintained at the hot junction.
