Installation of more equipment to increase production capacity of Iridium Catalyst for Green Hydrogen production

Furuya Metal Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Toshima-ku, Tokyo, President: Takahito Furuya) has decided to install more equipment to increase production capacity of iridium catalyst for production of green hydrogen.*¹ The facility, scheduled to commence operations in the fall of 2025, will establish a capability that could produce enough catalysts to feed 2GW*² or more of water electrolyser annually. This day this capital investment has been chosen by METI under its “GX Supply Chain Development Support Program”, which was ublicly released on June 28, 2024.

PEM*³ water electrolysis are rapidly gaining interest as a promising production technology of green hydrogen with its good responsiveness to variance of renewable energy- derived electricity. Iridium catalyst is essential in promoting oxygen evolution reaction in PEM water electrolysis. In order to spread the use of green hydrogen, it is essential to sustainably supply iridium, a rare metal, amid rapidly-expanding its demand. In addition to stable supply of the catalysts through this capital investment, we will work to establish an integrated iridium supply chain from catalyst production to its recycling by utilizing our proprietary recycling technology in collaboration with the leading partners, both foreign and domestic. Through these initiatives, we aim to achieve a market share of 50% in the global market of iridium catalysts on PEM water electrolysis by 2030, when the demand is expected to gain momentum, as a leading company of iridium.

Under the Mid-Term Business Plan 2027, we are working to “contribute to the transition to green society and further progress of digital society.” In the transition to the green society, we are promoting the “development and social implementation of new products that contribute to the conservation of the global environment.” We will contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral society through the supply of iridium catalysts, which are essential for the production of green hydrogen.

*¹ Hydrogen produced in the process without discharging CO ₂ through the electrolyzation of water using renewable energy-derived electricity such as solar and wind power.
*² 1 gigawatt is equivalent to the solar panel capacity of approx. 0.2 million single-family homes.
*³ PEM: Proton exchange membrane (proton-exchanged membrane)
